📰 FAAM PTA Newsletter - 12 Aug 24

12 AUGUST 2024

Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year at FAAM!

I'm Taten Shirley, the PTA president this year. We are diving into the school year quickly, so I wanted to go ahead and introduce myself and share some useful info and links with you that will help you stay connected.

I am an associate professor of humanities at Faulkner University, where I've worked since 2011. My husband, Allen, is the director of operations at the Heart of Alabama Food Bank, and we both have been blessed by sending our kids to Forest Avenue. We have one son, Cole, who is in sixth grade at Baldwin this year, and he went all the way through FAAM, kindergarten to fifth grade. Then we have one daughter, Collins, who is in fourth grade this year.

Our website coordinator, Jenn Nash, has worked so hard on updating our new website. It is easier to access with updated pictures and a cleaner look. Here's what you can find there, so check it out:

  • Join the PTA We have prided ourselves on having 100% membership every year. Help us reach that goal this year! It's only $5 to join.
  • Volunteer Go ahead and fill this form out if you're interested in volunteering, but there's more information below. This year our goal is to get 100% participation from each child's family. It does not have to be a parent, but your child will get credit if someone from his or her family volunteers, and we will have prizes for classes that receive 100% participation.
  • Order Popcorn and/or Popsicles for this fall (Orders close 8/16!)
  • Calendar of Events
  • Teachers' Favorite Things Lists We will be updating this in the coming weeks, adding the new teachers and updating the lists for teachers who changed grade levels this year.
  • Spirit Store Our spirit store manager, Allison Prillaman, will also have the store open every Thursday from 8:15-8:45 a.m. until Thanksgiving Break if you'd like to shop in person. Don't forget to order the Monday blue shirt! Mrs. Moody is allowing students who wear this themed shirt on Mondays to also wear jeans. It is a pre-order, so they will be delivered in September.

If you have Facebook, make sure you're following the PTA page, as well as any relevant grade-level groups. We also have a BST group for uniforms.

Important Upcoming Events

Mark your calendars for the following upcoming events:

  • Tuesday, August 13th: Our first Spirit Night at Chappy's (you can go to either location; just drop your receipt in the basket for FAAM to get a portion of the proceeds).
  • Friday, August 23rd: Volunteer Interest Breakfast Meeting 8:45-9:30 If you've been interested in volunteering but have never been sure what to do or haven't had someone contact you to help, plan to hang out for a bit after drop off on this day. We'll go over specific opportunities and would love to talk to you about where and how to get plugged in.
  • Friday, September 13th: Grandparents' Day (Go ahead and tell grandparents to mark their calendars!)
  • Friday, October 4th: FAAM Fall Fling--One of our biggest events of the year is moving to the fall. Be on the lookout for information about pre-orders, and if you own a business and are interested in being a sponsor, let us know! Don't worry; we'll still have the Drive-In. It will be in the spring.
  • Tuesday, October 8th: General PTA Meeting over Zoom (more details to come)

8 SEPTEMBER 2024 The school year is off to a great start, and we are so impressed at the sales of our discount cards already! If you're not new at FAAM, you know that our big fundraiser has traditionally been Boosterthon, which raised $50,000 for our school last year. The downside is that we actually raised over $80,000, but Boosterthon took a huge cut. The discount cards enable us to keep 100% of the profits to go directly toward our school. We are striving for every child to sell 5 cards,...
